The Baltic Sea Project improves the state of Baltic Sea by funding good ideas and inspiring people into action
At Ålandsbanken, we want to set an example to other actors around the Baltic Sea and remind people that everybody can do their share to help the situation. Supporting environmental projects has been a part of Ålandbankens activities since 1997. So far, we have contributed almost 5 million euros to environmental efforts.

Take a look at our practical tips!
“I want to promote the recovery of water bodies. Anything that is good for the environment is worth trying.”
Farmer Kristoffer Lundberg
“The work done by the bank for the Baltic Sea is truly impressive. It’s a brilliant idea that one can track the carbon footprint of their own purchases through digital services. It’s great to see such a mission being actively promoted.”
Executive Director of the Climate Leadership Council Jouni Keronen
“Improving the state of the Baltic Sea requires both raising awareness of the issue and funding, and Ålandsbanken has beautifully combined both in the Baltic Sea Project. The bank is a significant media channel, and therefore, the example set by banks also holds great importance.”
Environmental influencer, conservationist, and entrepreneur Saara Kankaanrinta
“It’s wonderful to have a partner with whom there is a truly shared interest – a cleaner and healthier Baltic Sea. Banks wield a lot of influence, and it’s great that Ålandsbanken has realized the opportunity to use its influence for the benefit of the environment.”
Sailor and Baltic Sea Project Ambassador Tuuli Petäjä-Sirén
“The financial sector has a pioneering role here because everyone follows the money. One way would be to adopt the Åland Index more widely in the banking sector. Every action matters in solving the climate crisis and halting the decline of biodiversity.”
Secretary General of WWF Finland, Liisa Rohweder
